Tips for Your Kilimanjaro Trek

How are tips handled?
Tips depend on the trek’s duration, complexity, staff, and group size. Groups typically meet before the trek’s end to discuss tips based on their experience. An envelope for tips will be provided at the Springlands Hotel post-trek.

Key Points on Tipping:

  • Tips should reflect professionalism and dedication, not summit success.
  • If expectations aren’t met, notify Babul Adventure. Do not feel pressured to tip.
  • Report any staff requesting tips on the mountain, as it violates company policy.
  • Do not pay tips on the mountain, except for refreshments on the Marangu Route.

Alternative Tipping Ideas:

  • Clothing or footwear (used or new) is appreciated.
  • Inviting guides for drinks or dinner at Springlands Hotel can supplement tips.
  • Tips can be in USD, Euros, TZ Shillings, or a mix.

Recommended Daily Tips per Staff Member:

  • Chief Guide: $20–25
  • Assistant Guide: $15–20
  • Cook: $10–15
  • Porter: $8–10
Each climber should expect to tip $250–$350 for the entire climb.

Staff Allocation (Non-Marangu Routes):

  • 1 climber: 1 guide, 3 porters, 1 cook
  • 2 climbers: 1 guide, 6 porters, 1 assistant guide, 1 cook
  • 3 climbers: 1 guide, 9 porters, 1 assistant guide, 1 cook
  • 4 climbers: 2 guides, 9 porters, 1 assistant guide, 1 cook, 1 waiter

Staff Allocation (Marangu Route):

  • 1 guide and 1 cook for every 8 climbers
  • 1 assistant guide per 3 climbers
  • 2 porters per climber

Additional Notes:

  1. Follow agent instructions if booked through a different provider.
  2. Confirm total staff with your guide on the first day to avoid confusion.
  3. During tipping at Springlands Hotel, ensure the guide is accompanied by another crew member for transparency.
